A Ruthless Warden Threw Her Into a Cell With Attack Dogs—Then He Discovered She Was a Decorated Navy SEAL
The descent into Oakridge’s lower level felt like walking into something out of another century — flickering bulbs, the smell of mildew and old fear soaked permanently into the concrete. Hayes and Vance marched Pendleton ahead of the tactical team, forcing him to lead them to the cell himself.
At the heavy steel door, Hayes ordered him to open it.
“I — I can’t,” Pendleton stammered, staring at the floor.
“Open the door, warden,” Vance snapped.
“You don’t understand.” His voice had gone thin with genuine terror now. “I put the dog in there with her. Brutus — he’s a killer. If you open that door, he’s going to maul whoever steps inside.”
Hayes didn’t blink. He shoved Pendleton aside, seized the iron latch himself, and hauled the heavy outer door open, the tactical team raising weapons behind him, braced for exactly the carnage Pendleton had promised.
Vance’s flashlight cut through total darkness and found, sitting cross-legged in the center of the concrete floor, Chief Petty Officer Sarah Higgins — jumpsuit torn at the sleeve, a deep bruise blooming across her forearm, and resting his massive head peacefully in her lap, Brutus. The hundred-and-ten-pound animal blinked in the sudden light, let out a soft whine, and made no move at all except to lean deeper into the hand still stroking slowly through his fur.
Sarah looked up, squinting slightly against the beam. “You’re late, Captain.”
Hayes exhaled a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding, the granite in his expression cracking into something close to a real smile. “Apologies, Chief. I-95 was a nightmare.”
“I see you brought the cavalry.” She rose slowly, patted her leg once. “Here.”
Brutus stood immediately and fell into a perfect heel at her left side. The tactical team lowered their weapons in something close to collective disbelief, staring at the woman who had somehow, alone, in total darkness, tamed the most violent weapon this prison had ever produced.
“Let’s get you out of here,” Hayes said.
