Ethan pictured it instantly — the dog alone in the smoke, terrified, abandoned again, and something in that image cut so close to his own worst memory that he couldn’t make himself walk the other way.

“We’ll get him once the fire team arrives,” Karen said.

“Once they arrive, he doesn’t have time.”

Another explosion of sound came from somewhere down the wing as flame burst through a duct overhead. “Move,” Halverson barked at the fleeing staff. “Evacuate now.”

Ethan planted his cane against the floor instead.

“I’m not leaving him.”

“Ethan, you can’t see,” Karen said, voice shaking. “You’ll get lost in the smoke.”

“Thor will find me.”

He turned from the exit before she could stop him and ran straight toward the smoke, slipping past the hands that tried to grab him, guided by nothing but memory and instinct. Karen shouted after him. He didn’t stop.

Deeper in the burning wing, Thor was losing what little control he had left, ramming his kennel with panicked force as smoke thickened around him. No one was coming. Not again. Not this time.

“Thor!” Ethan’s voice tore through the smoke and heat.

A bark answered him, frantic but unmistakable, and Ethan followed it, cane tapping wildly against the floor, lungs already burning. “Keep barking, boy! I’m coming!”

Thor barked again, louder, a beacon cutting through the roar of the fire. Ethan stumbled forward until his cane struck a wall, and he slid his palm along it until he felt the kennel door shaking under the force of Thor slamming against it from the other side.

“I’m here, boy! I’m right here!”

His hand found the gate handle, blistering hot even through the jacket he’d wrapped around his fingers. He pulled. It didn’t move. He pulled again, harder, smoke filling his chest with every breath.

“Do it again,” he rasped.
