Trapped in a Wooden Crate and Left to Die — A Cowboy Heard One Tiny Cry… Then Found the Secret No One Was Meant to See

## PART 2

Inside the house, James stripped both children and wrapped them in every blanket he owned. He built the fire up until the room was almost too hot, then boiled water and prepared it as warm baths—not hot enough to damage skin, just warm enough to remind their bodies that warmth existed.

Lucy came back to consciousness first.

Her eyes opened, and she immediately looked for her sister.

“Emma,” she said, her voice still weak.

“Right here,” James replied. “She’s warming up. You both are.”

“Is she going to wake up?”

James did not answer immediately.

The baby had not moved. Had not shown any signs of consciousness. Had barely seemed to breathe even when James held her to his chest during the ride home.

“I don’t know yet,” he said.

It was the most honest thing he could say.

He dressed them in clothes he had to alter by rolling up the sleeves—he had no children’s clothes, nothing small enough. He sat Lucy by the fire and gave her broth, which she drank without question. He held Emma and waited for signs of life that did not come.

Hours passed.

The blizzard raged outside, pounding against the windows with a fury that suggested the world was trying to break in. The fire crackled. Lucy fell asleep against the cushions, exhausted beyond anything her young body could fight.

And Emma remained motionless.

James held her tiny hand and waited for it to warm, waited for some sign of consciousness, waited for the moment when he would have to accept that he had found her too late.

He had done this before. Had held his daughter as she slipped away. Had felt the moment when her hand became simply flesh, no longer the hand of someone who loved him.

He did not think he could do it again.

But he was going to have to.

Because that was the deal the world had made with him six years ago. Loss. Repeated, unbearable, inescapable loss.

He was still holding Emma’s hand when she coughed.
